Shawn Basil, Special Educator
Shawn Basil began teaching as a special educator in 2001 in Nashville, Tennessee. During this time, he worked in severe behavior intervention schools with youth dealing with emotional issues and significant disruptive or aggressive behaviors. He earned the Techer or the Year Award for Murrell Special Education School in 2007.
In 2010, he moved to Ooltewah Tennessee where he taught youth in classes specific to those on the spectrum of autism. He worked eight years at Ooltewah Middle School and one at Ooltewah High School. During this time, he also coached wrestling, football, and baseball at the middle school level, and assisted with high school wrestling teams.
In 2019, he transferred to Cleveland City Schools (Cleveland Middle) where he taught in the Behavior Intervention Classroom. He again coached football and wrestling during this time. Issues with open heart surgery led to his seeking work in a less physically setting by the end of the year.
Since 2020, Mr. Basil has worked as a special education case manager with Tellico area schools. He has worked with Tellico Plains Junior High School throughout this time, those he has also worked two years with Tellico Plains Elementary, Coker Creek, Tellico Plains High School, and is currenetly working with Rural Vale in addition to TPJHS. He coached football for Tellico Plains High School for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 seasons.
Prior to teaching, Mr. Basil served six years as a Marine Corps Artillery Officer and Joint Tactical Air Controller (JTAC) with deployments to 14 countries over his career. He worked for 16 months as a floor supervisor for the Bridgestone-Factory in LaVergne, Tennessee. He also taught for 3 summers with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Washington.
Mr. Basil is a 1993 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, graduating with a degree in History. He is a 2006 graduate of Belmont University with a Master of Arts in Teaching - Special Education. He is an Eagle Scout.
